Observes that bricks and mortar subsidies have almost disappeared with housing benefit becoming the dominant financial subsidy, that British social rented housing is distributed as if it were a means-tested benefit and that shared-equity proposals are reactive and tackle the symptom of the problem not the cause. Comments on developments in the social and private sectors and concludes with some lessons for the future.
