520 _aExamines low-impact developments (LIDs), a groundbreaking model of sustainable rural living, and how they are beginning to secure a significant level of support from planning officials. They are defined as developments that through low negative environmental impact either enhance or do not significantly diminish environmental quality. They usually take the form of low-key agriculture or permaculture carried out in a sustainable way. LIDs generally failed to satisfy the requirements for agricultural dwellings in the countryside set out in PPG7, and PPS 7 contains no policies specifically aimed at LIDs. LIDs usually commence with temporary approvals and may progress to permanent permissions. Highlights a number of LIDs allowed on appeal.
