520 _aArgues that the ancient law insisting on owners of glebe land paying for chancel repairs must be taken seriously by property owners and their advisers. Parochial Church Council of the Parish of Aston Cantlow and Wilmcote, with Billesley, Warwickshire v Wallbank and Anor ([2003] UKHL 37, Abs66842) highlighted the potential levels of financial risk associated with chancel repair liability and the serious impact it can have on the title, value and marketability of particular properties. Chancel repair liability only affects the 5 200 parishes in which there is a mediaeval church. The church is taking a pro-active approach to identifying and registering liable land. Sees chancel repair liability as an overriding interest for some time to come.
