_v342 October 2005, 11-14(4)
520 _aA new report The role and effectiveness of safety representatives in influencing workplace health and safety, concludes that such reps have an important part to play in improving health and safety at work but that failure to enforce the already existing legal framework often prevents them functioning properly. Studies of the chemical and construction industries show a clear correlation between effective consultation and provision on health and safety and general employment matters, with senior management commitment to occupational health and safety and worker participation being a key factor. As more legislation or government enforcement is unlikely, the report recommends that trade unions must seek to broaden their involvement, whilst employers must be persuaded that it is in their interests to show more commitment to health and safety and workers representation.
