520 _aExplains the significance of the change to the rules on permitted alternative investments from 6 April 2006 (A day) for both those seeking to enhance their pension arrangements and those involved in the property industry. From A day the restricted choice of assets that investors can currently include in self-invested pensions (SIPPs) will be opened up to alternative assets such as private equity funds, residential property, hedge funds, wine and art. Looks at the proposals to allow the acquisition and ownership of overseas property. Notes that government is expected to clarify the full extent of the new rules in November 2005 and that HM Treasury has issued a consultation on the regulation of SIPPs seeking responses by 23 December 2005.
