520 _aDiscusses the development of the concept of knowledge management over the last two decades. Many organisations initially invested in expensive technological ways of managing knowledge, which failed to deliver the anticipated benefits because they ignored human and social dimensions. Emphasis is now increasingly being placed on other knowledge sharing tools such as storytelling, which convey varying depths of meaning about an organisation, and the concept of community of practice, consisting of staff collectives based on knowledge derived from shared work experiences and problems encountered.
