520 _aIn the light of the announcement by the Department for Transport of a number of new road schemes recommended by the eight English regions, this article examines whether the involvement of the regions in the planning and prioritisation of major transport projects is likely to be positive. Its advocates argue that the regions will adopt a more holistic approach to transport planning, giving proper consideration to economic and housing benefits of major schemes. Concern has been expressed, however, over funding levels, which are not guaranteed beyond the first three years. The uncertainty is prompting some regions to investigate alternative funding sources.
