520 _aThe Royal Festival Hall is to reopen after a £90m refurbishment. The modernisation of this grade I-listed 1950s venue is part of the redevelopment of the South Bank Centre site. The media giant IPC is relocating to Southwark. The South Bank is tempting some businesses to move south of the Thames. This is attributed to its cosmopolitan feel and lower rents than in Soho. The widening of the viaduct above Borough Market is planned. Campaigners claim it will destroy the market's charm, but Network Rail insist that the long-planned work is essential.
