520 _aExamines ways in which the dangers of flooding can be addressed. Many areas of the world's capitals are at risk, and climate change makes flooding increasingly. Increased incidence in the UK, together with events such as Hurricane Katrina in the US, have focused the insurance industry's attention on the problem. More detailed information is required for better risk assessment. Knowledge of flood risk also needs to be incorporated into planning. GIS techniques are being utilised to increase understanding of the risks. Despite apparent budget cuts, the UK government and other agencies appear to be making improvements towards flood risk management.
