_v66(8) September 2007, 62-64(3)
520 _aExamines the problems posed by flooding to the Government's housebuilding plans. Housebuilding has historically taken place on floodplains and insurance remains available. The government refuses to rule out floodplain developments despite recent major flooding events. However the map of areas at flood risk has now been redrawn. Government policy as set out in Planning Policy Statement 25 would not alter development plans if followed closely. Flood alleviation plans may have to be built into new development schemes, significantly increasing construction costs. The policy may have to be restricted to large development projects.
