520 _aReports on a resurgence in the private rented sector. It is now cheaper to rent than to buy in all parts of the country. Rents have kept pace with earnings, but property prices have soared. The growth in buy-to-let mortgages is seen as partly responsible. Some are attracted to the private rented sector by the higher mobility it provides. The lack of maintenance costs as a tenant is also a factor. If new investment in private renting declines as a result of the Northern Rock credit crunch, rents may fall further. However limited supply means this is not inevitable.
