520 _aSecond in a series of five articles marking 150 years of Estates Gazette looks at the history of British Land. The company's predecessor, the National Freehold Land Society, formed in response to the 1832 Electoral Reform Act with the aim providing men with the means to own land and therefore become enfranchised. British Land itself was an offshoot of this Society which was formed in 1856. The company grew significantly after its 1969 merger with Union Property Holdings in 1969.
