In Q1 2012 the national shop vacancy rate rose to a high of 14.6%, the same level as February 2011, with individual town centre vacancy rates ranging from 36% down to only 2%. Although vacancy rates may be low in some of the 205 centres visited, this may be disguising a worsening of retail quality.
