520 _aA framework for examining financial and social (resource) costs of wildlife conservation on farmland is outlined in terms of efficiency, subsidy and income support elements. The costs of financial compensation on three SSSIs are documented, together with a review of methods of identifying and measuring social costs and benefits of foregone agricultural output. The social costs of foregone agricultural output to conserve wildlife are found to be a fraction of the financial costs because of income support to farmers. Comparisons are made between financial costs on those sites and financial compensation costs identified by other studies. (MENTIONED IN READING LIST AND STORED ON GALLERY IN MENTOR SEQUENCE).
