Mortgage equity withdrawal and remortgaging activity
Series: Housing Finance ; (63) Autumn 2004, 8-21(14)Publication details: 2004Subject(s): Summary: Surveys current Mortgage Equity Withdrawal (MEW), which occurs when households borrow against the equity in their property and remortgaging activity. Uses data from the ODPM's "Survey of English housing" (SEH) to provide top-level estimates of the amounts and methods of MEW and focuses on the remortgaging market, which last year represented 45% of all gross advances. Explores the extent and significance of serial remortgaging. Concludes that SEH data suggests that around a third of all households moving or remortgaging in the last five years withdrew equity but despite such high levels of MEW households' general equity position remained strong. Although there is little current evidence of serial remortgaging it is expected to increase over time and MEW will slow down. Charts and tables cover MEW estimates, aspects of equity withdrawal and remortgaging. References.| Item type | Current library | Call number | Copy number | Status | Barcode | |
