On the uses and misuses of moisture meters: results from a survey

By: Contributor(s): Series: Building Engineer ; 76(5) May 2001, 13-17(5)Publication details: 2001Subject(s): Summary: Moisture meters, electronic diagnostic tools used to identify the existence of damp problems, are widely used by building surveyors. Describes the results of a study, which included a questionnaire survey of 108 building surveyors, looking at the use and effectiveness of moisture meters. One key finding was that these instruments are often used inappropriately. Explains that although moisture meters provide a quick, low-cost, non-destructive, and relatively accurate method of identifying moisture content in wood they do have limitations that must be taken into account in order to avoid misdiagnosis. Generally calibrated for timber, it is imperative that care is taken in interpreting the figures given by such meters. The study also revealed substantial variations in readings between the different meter types. Graphs.
