Future of town centres depends on state of independents

The growth of independents has slowed from 2.4% at the end of 2011 to just 0.8% in H1 2012. The national shop vacancy rate has increased to 14.6% which however disguises some significant regional differences. Comparison goods retailers have been hardest hit. Town centres are fundamentally changing both in terms of occupancy mix and quality.
