Learning lessons from fires

Ambrose, J.

Learning lessons from fires - 2002 - Building Control (136) December 2002, 8-10(3) .

Looks at the problem of arson in UK schools which damages more than 2 000 schools each year and costs £1m per week. Reports on a new publication for Zurich Municipal "The design and protection of new school buildings and sites" which aims to reduce this damage by improving school building and site design. The guide advises that schools be built from non-combustible materials and Loss Prevention Certification Board products should be used where high levels of insulation are required. Other recommendations include improved storage of waste, isolation of gas valves, upgraded boundary protection and the installation of sprinkler systems. Includes a checklist of considerations and details of other bodies which can offer advice.
