US realtors were voted fifth most respected professionals in a recent America Online poll, are licensed, well-trained and 92% belong to the US National Association of Realtors, whose strict code of ethics they subscribe to. Practising realtors operate in a commercial but collegiate environment with the multi-listing system (MLS) at its centre. The MLS is a co-operative database offering property sales information across rival realtors, giving more detailed information on the properties and fuller market information than UK systems such as Hometrack. Commissions are substantially higher at 5-6% in the US (1.5-2% in the UK). Looks at other features of the US real estate market such as property finders, open house sessions and homeowner log books.
