Abridged versions of papers presented at the 1994 Blundell Memorial Lectures. Part one examines current legal issues on rent reviews referring to caselaw, considers the consequences of the vacant possession assumption, fitting-out periods and incentives, premises fit for immediate use and occupation, disregard of rent-free periods, the assumption that a rent-free period has expired, and the assumption of compliance with repairing covenants. Part two looks at valuation aspects, including the effects of the development cycle, the effect of inducements on value, the role of the courts in dealing with rent review cases, built-in discounts, fitted-out assumptions and commercial bargaining in the property market.
