Part 1 sets out different age bands from pre-1850 to the present day and defines the different types of houses such as detached, semi-detached and terraced. Part 2 considers factors which can be used to date a house including dwelling size, tenure, construction type, condition and location. Part 3 considers a number of factors which can help with the dating a property including construction materials, street patterns and plot sizes and local knowledge of the area. Part 4 comprises of an illustrated guide which breaks down the construction of housing into different periods starting with Pre-1850 (Historic), 1850 - 1899 (Victorian), 1900 - 1918 (Edwardian), 1919 - 1944 (Interwar), 1945 - 1964 (Early post war), 1965 - 1980 (Late post war), 1981 - 2002 (Modern) and 2003 - 2010 (New). Appendix includes a guide to dating building elements. Concludes with a glossary of architectural terms. Statistical data is taken from the English Housing Survey.
